1975 Topps #444 Gene Garber

About Gene Garber
Henry Eugene Garber, pictured on card #444 in a Phillies uniform, was in the second season of a four-year Philadelphia stint (1974-78) that bridged a nineteen-year big-league career. A Pittsburgh 20th-round pick out of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania in 1965, he worked his father's dairy farm between minor-league stops at Batavia, Raleigh, York and Columbus before debuting with the Pirates on June 17, 1969. Traded through Kansas City to Philadelphia in 1974, the side-armer's herky-jerky windup and sinking change-up made him a bullpen fixture; in 1977 he won his only postseason decision, the first Phillies pitcher to win a playoff game in 62 years. Dealt to Atlanta in 1978, Garber famously struck out Pete Rose that August to end Rose's NL-record hitting-streak bid, and posted a career-high 30 saves for the 1982 division-winning Braves. He finished with 96 wins, 218 saves and 940 strikeouts across 931 games — fifth-most in history at his 1988 retirement — then returned to Lancaster County to farm and champion agricultural land preservation.
