1975 Topps #445 Felix Millan

About Felix Millan
A slick-fielding second baseman from Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, Félix Millán signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1964 before the Milwaukee (soon Atlanta) Braves drafted him that November. He debuted with Atlanta in 1966, earned the nickname "the Cat" ("El Gatito" in Puerto Rico) for his quick-handed defense, and made three straight All-Star teams (1969-1971) with two Gold Gloves (1969, 1972). One of the toughest hitters in the game to strike out—leading the National League in fewest whiffs four times—he helped Atlanta reach the inaugural 1969 NLCS. Traded to the Mets for pitchers Gary Gentry and Danny Frisella after the 1972 season, Millán anchored New York's 1973 pennant-winning infield and started at second in that year's World Series against Oakland. His 1975 Topps card, #445, arrived the same year he became the first Met to play all 162 games, setting career highs with 191 hits and 37 doubles. A brutal 1977 collision with catcher Ed Ott ended his major-league career; he later won a batting title in Japan's Central League.
