About Bart Johnson
Bart Johnson — born Clair Barth Johnson in Torrance, California — was a 6-foot-5 right-hander nicknamed "Mr. Smoke" for the mid-90s fastball that made him the White Sox's No. 1 pick (second overall) in the 1968 secondary draft after a year at BYU. He debuted in September 1969 after leading the Appleton Foxes to the Midwest League title, then spent his entire eight-year career (1969-74, 1976-77) with Chicago. His best season came in 1971: 12-10, a 2.93 ERA as a swingman, and the American League's lowest home-run rate. A strong 1974 comeback — back-to-back shutouts, a 10-4 record, 2.74 ERA — never carried into the season pictured by his 1975 Topps card; a spring-training slip on a wet mound herniated a disk and cost him the entire year. An experimental papaya-juice treatment got him back to the mound in 1976. Johnson later scouted for the White Sox for nearly two decades, discovering future GM Kenny Williams.
