About Sandy Alomar
Santos "Sandy" Alomar Sr. signed with the Milwaukee Braves out of Salinas, Puerto Rico, in 1960 and bounced through four organizations before sticking as California's everyday second baseman in 1969. A switch-hitting glove man and dangerous bunter, he played all 162 games in 1970 and 1971, made the 1970 AL All-Star team, and led the majors in plate appearances both years. His 648-game iron-man streak for the Angels earned him the nickname "Iron Pony." Card #266 catches him fresh off a July 1974 trade to New York, where he started at second base for the Yankees in 1975, hitting .239 and leading AL second basemen in fielding at .985. He held the job into 1976, backing up rookie Willie Randolph as the Yankees won the pennant before falling to Cincinnati in the World Series. Alomar closed his 15-year playing career with Texas in 1978, then coached in the majors for two decades — better remembered today as the father of six-time All-Star Sandy Alomar Jr. and Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar, both of whom he later managed in winter ball.
