About John Curtis

John Duffield Curtis, a left-hander out of Clemson University, was a two-time first-round pick — taken by Cleveland in 1966 (he chose college instead) and by Boston in the 1968 secondary phase. He debuted with the Red Sox on August 13, 1970, and on September 28, 1972, became the last pitcher to bat in a regular lineup at Fenway Park before the AL adopted the designated hitter. Traded to St. Louis with Mike Garman and Lynn McGlothen after the 1973 season, Curtis spent three years as a Cardinals starter, going 24-34 with a 3.88 ERA, the stretch pictured on his 1975 Topps card (#381). He later pitched for the Giants, Padres and Angels, retiring in 1984 with an 89-97 record, a 3.96 ERA and 825 strikeouts across 438 games. Afterward he freelanced as a baseball writer for the Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle and Sports Illustrated.
