1975 Topps #382 Don Baylor

About Don Baylor
Don Edward Baylor was born June 28, 1949, in Austin, Texas, and starred in football and baseball at Stephen F. Austin High School before enrolling at Blinn Junior College. Baltimore drafted him in the second round in 1967, and he reached the majors with the Orioles on September 18, 1970, driving in the winning run in his debut. Card #382 in the 1975 Topps set catches Baylor in the middle of his six years as an Oriole, a stretch that peaked in 1975 with a .282 average and 25 home runs. He built a reputation for crowding the plate, leading the league in hit-by-pitches three times in Baltimore and eventually retiring as the modern-era record holder with 267. Nicknamed "Groove" after a brash rookie prediction that Baltimore's kangaroo court needled him about for years, Baylor won the 1979 AL MVP with the Angels and became the only player to reach three straight World Series with three different teams — the Red Sox, Twins, and A's — winning it all with Minnesota in 1987. He finished with 338 home runs and 2,135 hits, then managed the expansion Colorado Rockies to the 1995 postseason as NL Manager of the Year.
