About Jim York

James Harlan York, a right-handed reliever from UCLA, broke into pro ball as a 16th-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in the 1969 draft after pitching for the Bruins in the 1969 College World Series alongside Chris Chambliss. He debuted with Kansas City in 1970 and had his finest season the next year, going 5-5 with a 2.89 ERA and 103 strikeouts as a workhorse out of the bullpen. That December the Royals sent York and Lance Clemons to Houston in the trade that brought John Mayberry to Kansas City, and he spent four seasons, 1972-75, as an Astros swingman - the stretch captured on his 1975 Topps card, No. 383 - working mostly in relief while making four spot starts in his final Houston season. York closed out a six-year, three-team career with the Yankees in 1976, finishing 16-17 with a 3.79 ERA in 174 games, then played a season in the minors with Chicago's Iowa Oaks before retiring in 1978.
