1975 Topps #241 Dick Tidrow

About Dick Tidrow
Dick Tidrow broke in with Cleveland in 1972, going 14-15 with a 2.77 ERA as a rookie starter highlighted by three shutouts, including back-to-back 1-0 blankings in late July. The next season he beat Oakland on a two-hitter, outdueling Rollie Fingers. Traded to the Yankees in April 1974 in the deal nicknamed the "Friday Night Massacre," which also brought Chris Chambliss to New York, Tidrow was shifted to the bullpen by manager Bill Virdon and became one of the American League's steadiest setup men. His 1975 Topps card catches him fresh off a season in which he and Sparky Lyle anchored the Yankees' pen, Tidrow posting a 3.12 ERA over 37 relief outings. Nicknamed "Dirt" for his perpetually unkempt uniform and appearance, he helped New York win back-to-back World Series titles in 1977 and 1978. Tidrow pitched 13 big-league seasons for five clubs, finishing 100-94 with 975 strikeouts before retiring in 1984. He went on to far greater influence as a Giants front-office executive, where alongside GM Brian Sabean he built the scouting and player-development machine behind San Francisco's 2010, 2012, and 2014 championship teams.
