About Vida Blue
Vida Rochelle Blue Jr. signed with the Kansas City Athletics as a 1967 second-round pick out of DeSoto High School in Mansfield, Louisiana, turning down major-college football offers to help support his family after his father's death. Debuting for Oakland in 1969, Blue announced himself on September 21, 1970, no-hitting the Minnesota Twins. His signature season came in 1971: a 24-8 record, a league-best 1.82 ERA, 301 strikeouts, and both the AL Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player Award, making him the youngest AL MVP of the 20th century and landing him on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time. Blue anchored Oakland's rotation through three straight World Series titles (1972-74) and five consecutive AL West crowns, going 20-9 in 1973 and 22-11 in 1975 - the year he combined with Glenn Abbott, Paul Lindblad, and Rollie Fingers on a no-hitter against the Angels. A six-time All-Star who started the Midsummer Classic for both leagues, Blue finished his 17-year career with 209 wins and 2,175 strikeouts. His 1975 Topps card #510 captures him mid-dynasty, while card #209 revisits 1971 on the "MVPs" subset, pairing him with National League MVP Joe Torre.
