1975 Topps #610 Ron Hunt

About Ron Hunt
Ron Hunt broke in with the Mets in 1963, finishing runner-up to Pete Rose for NL Rookie of the Year and becoming the club's first All-Star Game starter in 1964. A tough, contact-hitting second baseman, he made a second All-Star team in 1966 before trades sent him to the Dodgers, Giants, and finally the Expos, where he became a fan favorite. Hunt is remembered above all for crowding the plate and refusing to bail out: he led his league in hit-by-pitches seven straight seasons and, in 1971 with Montreal, took 50 plate-clipping pitches to set the modern single-season record, part of a 243-HBP career total that still ranks among the game's highest. That relentless style, echoing his hometown St. Louis's old Gas House Gang, earned him blue-collar nicknames like "Scrap Iron" and "Pigpen." Hunt closed his career back home, claimed off waivers by the Cardinals late in 1974; released the following spring training, he had already retired by the time this 1975 Topps card reached shelves. He finished a .273 hitter with 39 homers and 370 RBI over 12 seasons, and died in St. Louis in July 2026.
