About Ellie Hendricks

Elrod "Ellie" Hendricks, a left-handed-hitting catcher from Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands, anchored Baltimore's pitching staff through the Orioles' championship run of the late 1960s and 1970s. Signed by the Braves in 1959 after Hank Aaron spotted him at a St. Thomas exhibition, Hendricks worked through the low minors and the Mexican League, where his power hitting for the Jalisco Charros earned him the nickname "the Babe Ruth of Mexico," before Baltimore drafted him from the Angels' system in the November 1967 Rule 5 draft. He debuted in 1968 and split catching duties with Andy Etchebarren through three straight American League pennants from 1969 to 1971, batting .364 with a home run and two RBIs in the 1970 World Series win over Cincinnati. He also played for the Cubs and Yankees, earning a second championship ring with New York in 1977, before returning to Baltimore as a player-coach and then spending 28 years as the club's bullpen coach. His #609 card catches him mid-career: a .220 hitter with 62 home runs and 230 RBIs across 711 games, nearly all of them in Orioles orange and black.
