About Gene Michael

Eugene Richard Michael signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for a $25,000 bonus in 1958, out of Kent State, and debuted with them in 1966 before that December's trade sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the deal that brought Pittsburgh Maury Wills. The Dodgers sold him to the New York Yankees after the 1967 season, and the switch-hitting shortstop anchored their infield for seven years, hitting a career-high .272 in 1969 and pulling off the hidden-ball trick five times. Nicknamed "Stick" for his lean 6-foot-3 frame, he closed his career with the Detroit Tigers in 1975, finishing with a .229 average, 15 home runs and 226 RBI over 973 games. His 1975 Topps card catches him as a Yankee, though New York had released him that January. Michael's larger legacy came after he retired: as the Yankees' coach, manager, and eventually general manager, he rebuilt New York's farm system in the early 1990s around Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada, laying the foundation for the club's late-1990s championship dynasty.
