About Jim Holt

Jim Holt broke into pro ball in 1966, signed by the Kansas City Athletics after a fellow serviceman recommended him while Holt was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army. He climbed from the Class A Leesburg Athletics through the Peninsula Grays before Minnesota took him in the 1967 Rule 5 draft. An outfielder and first baseman for the Twins from 1968-74, Holt peaked in 1973 with career highs of .297, 11 home runs and 58 RBIs, batting ahead of Rod Carew. Traded to Oakland in August 1974, he delivered his career-defining moment that October: pinch-hitting for catcher Ray Fosse with the bases loaded in Game Four of the World Series, he singled home two runs to help the A's beat the Dodgers for their third straight championship. His 1975 Topps card captures him in that final Oakland season, backing up first base and pinch-hitting for a club still riding that dynasty before he closed his majors career in 1976 and finished with a season in the Mexican League.
