The story on this card
Topps paired two Birmingham brothers on #633 in the Big League Brothers subset (#631-634) of the 1977 set: Lee May, printed with the Baltimore Orioles, and Carlos May, printed with the New York Yankees. Lee had led the league with 109 RBI for Baltimore in 1976, the year Carlos was traded to the Yankees on May 18 and played in the World Series. In 1969 they became the first brothers to oppose each other in an All-Star Game, Carlos for the American League and Lee for the National League. Together they hit 444 career home runs.
Royals first baseman Lee May collected his 2,000th major-league hit on June 8, 1981, against Yankees left-hander Dave Righetti, near the end of a career that began with Cincinnati. Carlos May, younger brother of Lee May, was a two-time All-Star outfielder and first baseman for the Chicago White Sox who overcame a thumb injury from a military accident to post a 90-homer, .274 career over ten major league seasons.
