About this card

Cards #701-711 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #702, #707, #708 and #711 one of the four is not a rookie, so those count for the other three only, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Camper shares Rookie Prospects card #711 with Dennis Lamp of the Cubs, Craig Mitchell of the Athletics and Roy Thomas of the Astros; the card lists him with the Indians and is his rookie card. Manager Jeff Torborg named him a bullpen candidate in 1978 spring training, but he wound up with the Portland Beavers of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. He posted a 7.40 ERA in 29 appearances in a league whose overall ERA was 5.03. Cardell Camper made three appearances for the 1977 Cleveland Indians, winning a 5-4 start at Toronto on the final day of the season. He later went 19-5 in the Mexican League in 1980 and became a pastor in California.

The Cubs' Lamp shared 1978 Topps rookie card #711 with Cardell Camper of Cleveland, Craig Mitchell of Oakland and Roy Thomas of Houston. He had pitched 30 innings in 11 games for Chicago in 1977. In his August 21 debut against the Dodgers, he singled in both of his at-bats. Dennis Lamp learned pitching mechanics from Andy Messersmith in Little League. With Messersmith watching his next game, the future Cubs and White Sox pitcher threw his only Little League no-hitter.

The #711 card shows Mitchell, printed with the Athletics, alongside Cardell Camper (Indians), Dennis Lamp (Cubs) and Roy Thomas (Astros), who each have their rookie cards here. Mitchell made three appearances in 1977, one of them a start, and finished 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA. He struck out one batter in 5 2/3 innings, and his last game came on September 25 of that year. Craig Mitchell, a right-hander from Santa Rosa, California, pitched in five games for the Oakland Athletics between 1975 and 1977, going 0-2 with a 7.82 ERA over 12 2/3 innings after being Oakland's 1973 secondary-phase first-round pick.

Thomas pitched 6 1/3 innings in 4 relief appearances for Houston after a September 1977 call-up. His 1978 Topps rookie card, #711, is a Rookie Prospects card that lists him with Houston, alongside Cardell Camper of Cleveland, Dennis Lamp of the Cubs and Craig Mitchell of Oakland. Houston, St. Louis and Seattle pitcher Roy Thomas collected 4 hits in 34 major league at-bats. His only career RBI came against San Diego left-hander Randy Jones on July 19, 1978.
