1978 Topps #527 Vic Correll

About Vic Correll
Topps #527 still pictures Correll with the Braves, who released him on March 30, 1978, after knee surgery. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds on April 9, played 33 games at Triple-A Indianapolis, and was called up in mid-June when Johnny Bench strained his back. In 52 games he hit .238 with one home run and six RBI.
Vic Correll was a right-handed-hitting catcher who played parts of eight seasons, 1972 through 1980, for the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds. A Washington, D.C., native and the son of an Air Force colonel, he went to McClenaghan High School in Florence, South Carolina, and Georgia Southern, and was a ninth-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 1967. He debuted for Boston in the last game of the 1972 season, singling twice and driving in the winning run. Traded to Atlanta in March 1974, he caught behind Johnny Oates and was behind the plate when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run. His most productive season was 1975, when he set career highs with 103 games, 11 home runs and 39 RBI. He backed up Johnny Bench in Cincinnati in 1978 and 1979 and finished with 410 games, a .229 average and 29 home runs. After he retired he trained dogs and guided hunters on plantations in South Georgia.
