1979 Topps #698 Bill Stein

About Bill Stein
A rib injury sent Stein to the disabled list early in 1979, and Charlie Beamon Jr. was called up in his place. When he came back in late June, Dan Meyer held third base, so Stein started at second. He finished with seven home runs and a .248 average in 88 games. His Topps #698 carries the Mariners.
Bill Stein was a right-handed infielder who played 14 major league seasons, 1972 to 1985, for the Cardinals, White Sox, Mariners and Rangers. He batted .396 and made the American Baseball Coaches Association All-American team at Southern Illinois, then hit his first big-league home run in his debut on September 6, 1972. Stein moved around the diamond, with time at third, second, first and the outfield, and he was also a pinch hitter. In May 1981 he set an American League record with seven consecutive pinch hits, and he finished that year at .330. He hit .310 for Texas in 1983. His career line was .267 with 44 home runs and 311 RBIs in 959 games. After playing he managed in the Mets system, at Little Falls and Columbia, and in independent ball.
