1979 Topps #608 Dave McKay

About Dave McKay
The #608 card follows McKay's busiest season, 1978, when he became Toronto's regular second baseman and played a career-high 145 games. He hit .238 with seven home runs and 45 RBI. His six triples left him sixth in the American League. In 1979 itself he lost the job and spent most of the year at Triple-A Syracuse, hitting .218 with 12 RBI in 47 games for Toronto.
Dave McKay was a Canadian-born switch-hitting infielder who played second and third base for the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays and Oakland Athletics from 1975 to 1982. Born in Vancouver, he signed with Minnesota as an amateur free agent on June 20, 1971, and homered in his first major league at-bat, against Detroit's Vern Ruhle, on August 22, 1975. Toronto took him in the 1976 expansion draft. He finished with a .229 average, 21 home runs and 170 RBI. In 1981 he hit .273 in both the division series, with a home run against Kansas City, and the ALCS loss to the Yankees. After a last year in Oakland's minor league system he joined the Athletics' coaching staff in 1984. He coached at St. Louis from 1996 to 2011, with the Cubs in 2012-13 and at Arizona from 2014, mostly at first base. He worked alongside Tony La Russa from 1986 through 2011, was part of the 1989 Athletics' title staff, and was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
