Chicago remained Roberts' team on 1979 Topps #473 after he went 6-8 with a 5.25 ERA in 1978. He signed with San Francisco in February 1979. On June 28, the Giants sent him, Bill Madlock and Lenny Randle to Pittsburgh for Al Holland, Ed Whitson and Fred Breining.

Dave Roberts was a left-handed pitcher who played 13 major-league seasons for eight clubs from 1969 through 1981. Philadelphia signed him as an amateur free agent in June 1963. That summer he went 9-3 with a 1.79 ERA and 3 shutouts for Class-A Spartanburg. He later pitched in the Athletics' and Pirates' farm systems before reaching San Diego. Roberts finished his major-league career with 103 wins, 957 strikeouts and a 3.78 ERA. He was a member of Pittsburgh's 1979 World Series championship team. After baseball, he worked at Maryland's Allegany County Detention Center and coached at Potomac State College in West Virginia from 1996 through 1998.
