1979 Topps #497 Glenn Abbott

About Glenn Abbott
The 1979 Topps #497 comes after Abbott's 1978, when he went 7-15 with a 5.27 ERA over 28 starts. He completed eight of them and struck out 67 in 155 1/3 innings. Seattle named him its Opening Day starter again in 1979, when he went 4-10.
Glenn Abbott, a 6-foot-6 right-hander from Little Rock, Arkansas, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round in June 1969 and signed straight out of high school. He debuted July 29, 1973, starting against the Texas Rangers, and pitched for Oakland through 1976. In the last game of the 1975 season he threw the sixth inning of the first four-pitcher combined no-hitter in major league history, between Vida Blue and Paul Lindblad. Seattle took him in the November 1976 expansion draft, and he stayed longer than any other member of the original Mariners roster, leading the club in wins in 1977 and 1980 with 12 each. Elbow bone chips and viral meningitis cost him the 1982 season. Detroit bought his contract for $100,000 on August 23, 1983, and released him August 14, 1984. He finished 62-83 with a 4.39 ERA in 248 games. A long minor league pitching-coach career followed in the Mets, Athletics, Padres and Rangers systems.
