1979 Topps #604 Jeff Newman

About Jeff Newman
Newman's best season came in 1979, when he hit 22 home runs and drove in 71, both career highs, over 143 games. AL manager Bob Lemon named him Oakland's only All-Star while he was hitting .229 with 16 homers, and he stood second to Ted Simmons among major league catchers in home runs at the break. Six of his homers came while playing first base. Card #604 shows him as an Athletic.
Jeff Newman was a catcher and first baseman who spent nine major league seasons, 1976 to 1984, seven with the Oakland Athletics and two with the Boston Red Sox. A Fort Worth native who played at Texas Christian University, he was drafted by Cleveland in the 26th round in 1970 and did not begin catching until 1972. Oakland bought his contract in October 1975. He platooned with Jim Essian behind the plate from 1978 to 1980. Traded to Boston with Tony Armas after the 1982 season, he was released in spring training 1985 with a .224 career average and 63 home runs. He then coached and managed in the A's system and served as Oakland's interim manager for ten games in 1986 (2-8). He won Southern League Manager of the Year at Huntsville in 1989 and coached third base for Cleveland from 1992 to 1999, then for Seattle in 2005.
