Matt Keough entered Oakland's system as an infielder and reached the majors as a right-handed pitcher. The Athletics selected him in the seventh round of the 1973 draft from California's Corona del Mar High School. After batting .210 in Double-A in 1976, he converted to pitching. His father, Marty, and uncle, Joe, had both played in the majors. In 1980, Keough won 16 games and threw 20 complete games for Oakland, earning American League Comeback Player of the Year honors. He pitched for five major-league clubs over nine seasons, then spent 1987 through 1990 with Japan's Hanshin Tigers. Following his playing career, he worked as a pitching coach, scout and baseball executive.
