About Ron Fairly

Toronto traded Fairly to California on December 8, 1977, for Butch Alberts and Pat Kelly. He appeared in 91 games for the Angels in 1978, including 78 at first base. He hit .217 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI. His 1979 Topps card, #580, lists California.

Ronald Ray Fairly grew up in Long Beach, California, and played center field for USC's 1958 College World Series champions. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, choosing to stay near home despite a larger Chicago offer. Carl Furillo taught him how to play right field in National League parks; Fairly later wore Furillo's number 6 as a tribute. His 21 major league seasons included time with six clubs and All-Star selections for Montreal and Toronto. He finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average. After playing, he broadcast games for the Angels, Giants and Mariners. Fairly died on October 30, 2019.
