1979 Topps #579 Greg Gross

About Greg Gross
The 1979 card, #579, carries Chicago Cubs team lettering, but Gross had been traded to Philadelphia on February 23, with Manny Trillo and Dave Rader, for Jerry Martin, Barry Foote, Ted Sizemore, Derek Botelho and Henry Mack. In his first Phillies season he hit .333 in 111 games, with 58 hits in 174 at-bats.
Greg Gross was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and pinch hitter who played from 1973 to 1989 for Houston, the Chicago Cubs and, for most of his career, the Philadelphia Phillies. The Astros drafted him out of Red Land High School in the fourth round in 1970. He batted .314 as Houston's rookie right fielder and leadoff man in 1974, and The Sporting News named him its National League Rookie Player of the Year. Over 1,809 games he hit .287 and struck out only 250 times in 3,745 at-bats. With Philadelphia he became a specialist off the bench, led the league with 19 pinch hits in 1982, and went 3-for-4 in pinch roles in the 1980 NLCS on the way to the Phillies' championship. He holds the Phillies record for career pinch hits with 117. He later coached in the Rockies and Phillies systems, served as Phillies hitting coach, and managed the Reno Aces.
