About Pete Broberg

The #578 card places Broberg with the Oakland Athletics, his final big-league stop. His 1978 season there was a return to the rotation, with 26 starts in 35 games and 94 strikeouts. He went 10-12 with a 4.62 ERA over 165 2/3 innings. October 1, 1978 was his last major-league game.

Pete Broberg was a hard-throwing right-hander who pitched eight seasons in the majors, 1971 to 1978, for the Senators and Rangers, Brewers, Cubs and Athletics. The Athletics took him second overall in the 1968 draft, but he turned down a reported $175,000 bonus and enrolled at Dartmouth. The Senators made him the first pick of the secondary phase of the 1971 draft, and he went straight to the majors without a day in the minors, the fifth player to do so after being drafted. His father, Gus Broberg, was an All-American basketball player at Dartmouth who lost his right arm as a Marine pilot in World War II. Broberg won the first game and threw the first shutout in Texas Rangers history in 1972. Texas traded him to Milwaukee for Clyde Wright on December 5, 1974, and his busiest year came there in 1975, when he went 14-16 over 220 1/3 innings. He finished 41-71 with a 4.56 ERA and 536 strikeouts.
