About Darold Knowles

Knowles struck out 34 batters for Montreal in 1978. His 1979 Topps card, #581, retained the Expos name while he pitched for St. Louis, which he later called his boyhood dream team. He made 48 relief appearances and recorded 6 saves for the Cardinals that season.

Darold Knowles pitched sixteen major-league seasons for seven franchises, making 765 appearances and recording 143 saves with a 3.12 ERA. The left-hander reached 71 appearances and 27 saves for Washington in 1970. With Oakland he became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving Games 1 and 7 against the Mets in 1973. He finished that Series with 6 1/3 innings and no earned runs, retiring Wayne Garrett for the final out. After his playing career, Knowles coached pitchers in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations, including eight years as a roving instructor for St. Louis. He was inducted into the Florida State League Hall of Fame and, in 2012, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
