1979 Topps #393 Scott McGregor

About Scott McGregor
Elbow tendonitis carried into 1979 and put McGregor on the disabled list for nearly a month. Beginning with a June 11 shutout in Chicago, he went 13-4 the rest of the way and led the majors in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 3.52. From June 29 to July 29 he went 47 innings without issuing a walk. His first playoff start came the day after Al Bumbry's two-run ninth-inning error cost Baltimore a sweep of the Angels, and he later won Game 3 of the World Series in Pittsburgh. Card #393 shows him with Baltimore.
Scott McGregor was a left-hander who spent all 13 of his big-league seasons, 1976 to 1988, with the Baltimore Orioles, finishing 138-108 with a 3.99 ERA. The Yankees took him 14th overall in the 1972 draft out of El Segundo High School, where George Brett was his teammate, and he reached Baltimore in the ten-player trade of June 1976. He was known for constantly changing the speeds of his pitches. McGregor won 20 games in 1980, was an American League All-Star in 1981, and went 18-7 in 1983. He clinched the 1979 ALCS with a Game 4 shutout of the California Angels and the 1983 World Series with a complete-game shutout of the Phillies in Game 5. The Orioles inducted him into the team Hall of Fame in 1990. After playing he became a youth pastor, then returned to baseball as a minor league pitching coach and served as Baltimore's interim bullpen coach in 2013.
