1979 Topps #507 Tony Armas

About Tony Armas
Armas played 80 games in 1979, a second straight year cut short by injury. He batted .248 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI. In 1980 he became a full-time right fielder and played 158 games. His Athletics card is #507.
Tony Armas was a Venezuelan outfielder who played 14 seasons from 1976 to 1989 for the Pirates, Athletics, Red Sox and Angels and hit 251 home runs. He was the first Venezuelan to win a major league home run title. He tied for the American League lead with 22 in the strike-shortened 1981 season, when he made his first All-Star team and was named Sporting News Player of the Year. The Red Sox acquired him after the 1982 season in a trade that sent Carney Lansford to Oakland, and he hit 36 home runs in 1983. In 1984 he led the league with 43 home runs, 123 RBI and 339 total bases and earned a Silver Slugger. His 187 home runs from 1980 through 1985 were the most in the American League. Injuries put him on the disabled list twelve times. He was inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, and his son Tony Jr. also pitched in the majors.
