About this card

Cards #701-726 are the 26 three-player Prospects cards, one per club - AL clubs first, each league in alphabetical order by city - with black-and-white player photos on the front. A Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card. On #703, #705, #712, #718 and #723, one or two of the players never reached the major leagues.

The story on this card

Perlozzo played two games for the San Diego Padres in 1979 and went hitless in two at-bats; the second came on September 13, his final major-league game. Card #709 still prints him with the Minnesota Twins, one of three Twins on a team Prospects card with Rick Sofield and Kevin Stanfield. Sofield and Stanfield each have their rookie card here, while Perlozzo's came a year earlier. Sam Perlozzo, a second baseman from Cumberland, Maryland, played 12 games for the Twins and Padres, then moved into coaching. He managed the Baltimore Orioles from August 2005 to June 2007 and later coached for the Mariners and Phillies.

Sofield made his major-league debut for Minnesota on April 6, 1979, and batted .301 with 12 RBI in 35 games that season. His rookie card was 1979 Topps #709, the Twins' Prospects card shared with Sam Perlozzo and Kevin Stanfield, both also listed with Minnesota. Before joining the Twins, outfielder Rick Sofield turned down a football scholarship from Michigan. He grew up in Morris Plains, New Jersey, and played several sports there.

Stanfield went 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Toledo in 1978, completing 6 games over 124 innings. He appeared on 1979 Topps #709, his rookie card, alongside Sam Perlozzo and Rick Sofield on the Twins' Prospects card, all listed with Minnesota. Twins left-hander Kevin Stanfield made his major-league debut on September 14, 1979. He relieved Dave Goltz and retired the only batter he faced that day.
