About Wayne Gross
In 1978 Gross collected 57 hits in 285 at-bats for Oakland, batting .200. He hit 7 home runs and drove in 23. The Athletics used him at third base in 106 games and at first in 15. His 1979 Topps card was #528, again with Oakland.
Wayne Gross was a left-handed-hitting third baseman for the Oakland Athletics (1976-83 and 1986) and the Baltimore Orioles (1984-85). At Cal Poly Pomona he played third base for John Scolinos and punted for the football team, finishing third in the nation in punting in 1972 at 40.7 yards; the school inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988. He hit .281 with 61 RBI in 1980. In the 1981 division series Oakland swept Kansas City, with Gross going 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBI, before the Yankees swept the A's in the ALCS. Oakland traded him to Baltimore for Tim Stoddard on December 8, 1983, and he hit 22 home runs for the Orioles in 1984. He finished with 121 home runs in 1,106 games, plus one relief appearance on the mound, 2 1/3 innings in 1983 without an earned run. Gross appeared with Carney Lansford in a cameo in the 1994 film Angels in the Outfield, as a Chicago White Sox reliever. He later coached high school baseball and tennis at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California.
