1955 Topps #200 Jackie Jensen

About Jackie Jensen
A two-sport All-American at the University of California, Berkeley, Jackie Jensen helped Cal win the first College World Series in 1947 and starred as a football halfback before signing with the Oakland Oaks and having his contract sold to the New York Yankees in 1950. A right fielder, he reached the majors that year, then moved through Washington (1952-53) before finding stardom in Boston (1954-59, 1961). A three-time All-Star (1952, 1955, 1958) and three-time AL RBI champion (1955, 1958, 1959), Jensen won the 1958 AL MVP on the strength of 35 home runs and a league-leading 122 RBI, and earned a Gold Glove in 1959. Over 11 seasons he batted .279 with 1,463 hits, 199 home runs, 929 RBI, and 143 stolen bases in 1,438 games. Nicknamed "The Golden Boy" for his dazzling two-sport career, he became the first athlete to appear in a Rose Bowl, a World Series, and an MLB All-Star Game. A crippling fear of flying drove him to retire at his peak after 1959. This card is a Series 2 high number. Jensen died in 1982.

Variations & how to tell them apart
High Number (#161-210)
Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
