About Dick Hyde
Richard Elde "Dick" Hyde was a right-handed relief pitcher born August 3, 1928, in Hindsboro, Illinois. Nicknamed "The Mayor of Rising" for his athletic exploits while living in Rising, Illinois, during his Champaign high school years, Hyde signed with the Washington Senators as a teenager in the late 1940s and worked his way up through the minors, his career interrupted by Korean War military service. On Senators president Calvin Griffith's 1954 suggestion, he dropped his arm angle to a submarine delivery. He debuted in 1955 and pitched almost exclusively in relief. His breakout came in 1958, when he went 10-3 with 19 saves and a sparkling 1.75 ERA, led the majors in games finished, was named American League Sophomore of the Year, and placed 12th in MVP voting. Over six seasons with Washington and Baltimore he compiled a 17-14 record and 3.56 ERA across 169 games. This is his Topps rookie card, a Series 5 short print.
