About Harry Anderson
Harry Walter "Harry the Horse" Anderson was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and first baseman born September 10, 1931, in North East, Maryland. After starring in semipro ball and attending West Chester State Teachers College, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in the fall of 1952 for a $40,000 bonus. Phillies broadcaster Gene Kelly tagged him "Harry the Horse" after the Damon Runyon character from Guys and Dolls, fitting his 6-foot-3, 205-pound build. Anderson debuted in 1957, and this 1957 Topps card is his rookie card. He earned a spot on the 1957 MLB Rookie All-Star team, then broke out in 1958, batting .301 with 23 home runs and 97 RBIs, all career highs, and was named the Baseball Writers' Sophomore of the Year. After a decline, the Phillies traded him with Wally Post to Cincinnati in June 1960. Over 484 games (1957-1961) he hit 60 home runs with 242 RBIs and 419 hits. He was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
