1957 Topps #333 Ernie Johnson

Milwaukee Braves · National League · Series 4 (#265-352) · pitcher
Scarce Series 4

Scarce fourth series: #265-352 is the tough run of the 1957 set — roughly twice as hard to find as the other series ("tough, not rare"). No documented reason survives; the best-researched account is that Topps printed the hastily assembled final series in quantity and left Series 4 with the shortest run.

About Ernie Johnson

Ernie Johnson (Ernest Thorwald Johnson Sr.), born June 16, 1924, in Brattleboro, Vermont, signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1942 and, after three years in the U.S. Marine Corps that included the invasion of Okinawa, worked his way up through the minors at Hartford, Milwaukee, and Denver. The right-handed reliever debuted in the majors on April 28, 1950, and pitched for the Boston Braves (1950-1952), Milwaukee Braves (1953-1958), and Baltimore Orioles (1959), finishing 40-23 with a 3.77 ERA over 273 games. Leaning on a sinking palmball, he led the 1953 Braves with 35 relief appearances and a 2.67 ERA. In Milwaukee's 1957 world-championship season he went 7-3 with four saves, then shone in the World Series, working Games 1, 3, and 6 and allowing just one run in seven innings while striking out eight. He later became a beloved Braves broadcaster for over three decades and was father of sportscaster Ernie Johnson Jr. As a scarce Series Four card, this is among the tougher 1957 Topps issues to complete.
