1957 Topps #334 Jerry Schoonmaker

Washington Senators · American League · Series 4 (#265-352) · outfield
Scarce Series 4

Scarce fourth series: #265-352 is the tough run of the 1957 set — roughly twice as hard to find as the other series ("tough, not rare"). No documented reason survives; the best-researched account is that Topps printed the hastily assembled final series in quantity and left Series 4 with the shortest run.

About Jerry Schoonmaker

Jerald Lee "Jerry" Schoonmaker (December 14, 1933 - March 18, 2018) was an outfielder for the Washington Senators. A standout at the University of Missouri, he captained the Tigers and won a silver medal with the United States at the 1955 Pan American Games. Washington signed him in 1955 to a $30,000 bonus contract, but the era's Bonus Rule forced the club to keep him on its big-league roster rather than develop him in the minors. He debuted June 11, 1955, appearing in 20 games, then spent 1956 in military service before returning for 30 more games in 1957. Across those two seasons he hit .130 with 9 hits, a double, a triple, and one home run in 69 at-bats over 50 games. Finally sent down in 1958, he batted .222 in the minors before a metal sliver injured his left eye during offseason construction work, ending his career at 25. This 1957 Topps card comes from the scarce high-numbered Series Four, making it tougher to find than common-print teammates.
