1957 Topps #335 Granny Hamner

Philadelphia Phillies · National League · Series 4 (#265-352) · 2nd base
Scarce Series 4

Scarce fourth series: #265-352 is the tough run of the 1957 set — roughly twice as hard to find as the other series ("tough, not rare"). No documented reason survives; the best-researched account is that Topps printed the hastily assembled final series in quantity and left Series 4 with the shortest run.

About Granny Hamner

Granville Wilbur "Granny" Hamner (1927-1993) signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1944 at age 17, debuting that September during World War II. A shortstop and second baseman, he became the heart of the infield for the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the young Phillies club that won the National League pennant. In that year's World Series, a four-game sweep by the New York Yankees, Hamner hit a team-best .429 (6-for-14) with three extra-base hits. He earned three straight All-Star selections (1952-1954), started the 1952 All-Star Game at shortstop before his home Shibe Park crowd, and served as team captain from March 1952. Traded to Cleveland in 1959, he later resurfaced with the Kansas City Athletics in 1962 as a pitcher. Over 17 seasons he batted .262 with 104 home runs and 708 RBIs. Owner Robert Carpenter called him "the best clutch hitter we ever had," and in 1969 fans voted him the Phillies' all-time greatest shortstop. This is a scarce high-number Series Four card in the 1957 Topps set.
