About Haywood Sullivan
Haywood Cooper Sullivan (1930-2003) was a catcher who became one of the most consequential executives in Boston Red Sox history. An All-SEC quarterback at the University of Florida, he chose baseball when the Red Sox signed him in June 1952 with a hefty $75,000 bonus. He debuted at Fenway Park on September 20, 1955, and was famously pulled after two hitless at-bats for pinch-hitter Ted Williams. Sullivan caught for Boston (1955-1960) and the Kansas City Athletics (1961-1963), batting .226 with 13 home runs over 312 games. In May 1965, at age 34, he took over as the A's manager, the youngest skipper in the majors that season, going 54-82. He then moved into Boston's front office, rising to general manager and, from 1978, part-owner alongside Jean Yawkey. His tenure is remembered for a costly clerical lapse: failing to mail 1978 contract offers on time, which cost the Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk to free agency. This scarce Series Four card is his Topps rookie.
