About Gil McDougald

Gil McDougald signed with the Yankees for a $1,000 bonus in 1948 out of San Francisco's semipro Bayside Braves and broke into the majors on April 20, 1951. He capped his rookie year by hitting the first grand slam by a rookie in World Series history, then narrowly beat out Minnie Miñoso for American League Rookie of the Year. Over ten seasons - all with New York - McDougald shuttled between second base, third base, and shortstop, leading AL infielders in double plays at all three spots in different years and helping the Yankees to eight pennants and five World Series titles as a five-time All-Star. His career carries a sobering footnote: on May 7, 1957, a line drive off his bat struck Cleveland's Herb Score in the eye, derailing the young pitcher's career. McDougald also battled worsening hearing loss, the result of a batting-practice line drive in 1955, before retiring after the 1960 season pictured on this card, at just 32.
