About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards scattered through the 1960 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a nickname headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The players on this card

"Rival All Stars" pairs the era's most magnetic Yankee with the National League's rising Cardinal captain, one of ten multi-player specials scattered through the 1960 Topps set. Mickey Mantle came off back-to-back All-Star seasons, batting .285 with 31 home runs in 1959 and .275 with 40 homers in 1960, finishing second in AL MVP voting that year. Ken Boyer anchored St. Louis at third base, hitting .309 in 1959 and .304 with 32 homers and 97 RBI in 1960, backing both seasons with Gold Gloves en route to seven All-Star selections and the 1964 NL MVP award. The two would meet for real four years later in the 1964 World Series, which Boyer's Cardinals won in seven games over Mantle's Yankees. Mantle was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1974, his first year on the ballot; Boyer, despite a strong case, has never been inducted.
