About Casey Stengel
Charles Dillon "Casey" Stengel broke into pro ball in 1910 and reached Brooklyn in 1912, playing 14 National League seasons with the Dodgers, Pirates, Phillies, Giants, and Braves and hitting .284 with a memorable inside-the-park home run off the Yankees in Game 1 of the 1923 World Series. His nickname "the Ol' Perfessor" traced to 1914, when a shoulder injury sent him to Mississippi to help his old Kansas City high school coach run practices at Ole Miss. After journeyman managerial stints with Brooklyn (1934-36) and Boston (1938-43), Stengel took over the Yankees in 1949 and won an unmatched five straight World Series (1949-53), finishing with ten pennants and seven titles in twelve seasons. This card catches him in his final Yankee summer: after New York fell to Pittsburgh in the 1960 World Series on Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 walk-off homer, ownership let the 70-year-old go days later, prompting his line, "I'll never make the mistake of being seventy again." He entered the Hall of Fame in 1966.
