1960 Topps #35 Whitey Ford

About Whitey Ford
Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1947, debuted in the majors on July 1, 1950, and went on to spend his entire 16-year career in pinstripes. After two years in the Army during the Korean War, he returned in 1953 and became the Yankees' unquestioned ace, nicknamed "the Chairman of the Board" by catcher Elston Howard for his calm command on the mound. Ford led the American League in wins three times (1955, 1961, 1963) and in ERA twice, capping a 25-4 season in 1961 with the Cy Young Award and World Series MVP honors. He helped the Yankees to 11 pennants and six championships, and his 10 career World Series wins and 33⅔ consecutive scoreless innings both remain records. Ford retired in 1967 with a .690 winning percentage, the best among 200-game winners since 1900, and 236 victories, still the Yankees' franchise record. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, and the club retired his No. 16 that same year. His 1960 Topps #35 captures him mid-prime, two years before his second Cy Young-caliber season.
