1960 Topps #34 George Anderson

About George Anderson
George Lee Anderson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1953 out of Los Angeles' Susan Miller Dorsey High School, then spent five seasons working through the Dodgers' farm system as a second baseman. Playing for the Double-A Fort Worth Cats in 1955, a radio announcer dubbed him "Sparky" for his feisty play, a nickname that stuck for good. Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on December 23, 1958, Anderson won the starting second-base job and played 152 games in 1959, his only major league season as a player, hitting .218 with 34 RBI and no home runs. This 1960 Topps card, #34, is his rookie issue and the sole Topps card of his playing days; he never returned to the majors as a player. Anderson instead became one of the game's greatest managers, leading the Cincinnati Reds to back-to-back World Series titles in 1975-76 and the Detroit Tigers to a third championship in 1984, the first manager to win it all in both leagues. He won two AL Manager of the Year awards and finished with 2,194 career victories and five pennants before his 2000 induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
