About Dave Philley
Dave Philley debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1941, then spent four years as an Army military policeman before returning to play 18 seasons for eight teams. A converted catcher who took up switch-hitting after a boyhood fall broke his left arm, the Texas rancher led American League outfielders in assists three times and topped .300 twice, highlighted by a .303 season for the 1953 Athletics. He reached his only World Series with Cleveland in 1954, then sparked a turnaround in Baltimore in 1955, hitting .299 and earning the club's Most Valuable Oriole award. Sold to the Phillies before 1958, Philley became one of baseball's premier pinch-hitters, stringing together nine straight pinch hits spanning the end of that season into 1959, a major-league record that still stands - the form he's pictured in on his 1960 Topps card, issued in his final Phillies season before a May trade to the Giants. He later set an American League mark with 24 pinch hits in 1961, retiring with 1,700 hits and a .270 average.
