About Art Mahaffey
Arthur Mahaffey Jr., signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in June 1956, spent four-plus seasons developing in Philadelphia's farm system before his July 30, 1960 debut — the rookie season that produced this Sport Magazine Rookie Star card. The Cincinnati-born right-hander went 7-3 with a 2.31 ERA down the stretch, finishing third in NL Rookie of the Year balloting. He was an All-Star in 1961 and 1962, setting a Phillies record with 17 strikeouts against the Cubs on April 23, 1961, and nearly no-hitting Chicago that August before Ron Santo's single broke it up in the first inning. His best year came in 1962: a 19-14 mark with 177 strikeouts and an Opening Day start, and in April 1963 he became the first Phillie to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Mahaffey was on the mound on September 21, 1964, when Chico Ruiz's steal of home ignited Philadelphia's historic ten-game collapse. He closed out his seven-year career with the 1966 Cardinals, finishing 59-64 with a 4.17 ERA.
