About Lou Klimchock
Lou Klimchock signed with the Kansas City Athletics out of Latrobe High School in 1957. He batted .389 to lead Class C Pocatello in 1958, earning Pioneer League Rookie of the Year and MVP honors, then was called up that September. In just his second major-league game, the 18-year-old homered off fellow rookie Stover McIlwain of the White Sox — the first time in modern history a teenager had gone deep off a teenager. He repeated as a minor-league Rookie of the Year in 1959 at Double-A Shreveport before returning to Kansas City, where his 1960 Topps card (#137) appeared in the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset. A third and second baseman, Klimchock played parts of 12 major-league seasons for the Athletics, Braves, Senators, Mets, and Indians, batting .232 with 13 home runs; his best year came in 1969, when he hit .287 for Cleveland. He later spent more than two decades with the Arizona Major League Alumni Association. His grandson, Mitch Nay, was a 2012 MLB draft pick.
