About Joe Morgan
Joseph Michael Morgan signed his first pro contract with the Boston Braves organization in 1952, after starring in hockey and baseball at Boston College. A left-handed-hitting infielder, "Walpole Joe" — a nickname tied to his lifelong hometown of Walpole, Massachusetts — broke into the majors in April 1959 with the Milwaukee Braves, splitting that season with the Kansas City Athletics, the club pictured on his 1960 Topps rookie card, #229. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, and St. Louis Cardinals, finishing a four-year career in 1964 with a .193 average and 36 hits; both of his home runs came for Cleveland within a two-week span in 1960. Morgan's lasting baseball legacy came later, managing nine years (1974-82) with Triple-A Pawtucket before taking over the Red Sox in July 1988. Boston won its first 12 games under him — a run dubbed "Morgan Magic" — and he led the club to AL East titles in 1988 and 1990.
