About Whitey Herzog
Whitey Herzog broke into pro ball in 1949, signing with the New York Yankees out of New Athens, Illinois, the same year they inked Mickey Mantle. Playing for the Yankees' McAlester, Oklahoma farm club, he picked up his lifelong nickname when a local sportscaster likened his bleached-blond crew cut to that of Yankees pitcher Bob "White Rat" Kuzava. A left-handed-hitting outfielder, Herzog reached the majors with the Washington Senators in 1956, was dealt to the Kansas City Athletics in 1958, the club pictured on this 1960 Topps card, and closed out his eight-year playing career with Baltimore and Detroit, batting .257 with 25 home runs and 172 RBI in 634 games. His far bigger legacy came in the dugout: three straight AL West titles managing the Royals from 1976 to 1978, then three pennants and the 1982 World Series championship with St. Louis, where his speed-and-defense system became known as "Whiteyball." Named National League Manager of the Year in 1985, Herzog was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010 by the Veterans Committee.
