About Bob Elliott
Robert Irving "Bob" Elliott built his big-league reputation as a hitter long before he took the Kansas City Athletics dugout for his only major-league managing job, pictured on card #215 in the 1960 Topps skippers' subset. A right-handed third baseman/outfielder, he broke in with Pittsburgh in 1939, made four All-Star teams as a Pirate, then anchored the Boston Braves' pennant-winning 1948 club after being dealt to Boston for Hall of Famer Billy Herman. Elliott won the 1947 National League MVP award, batting .317 with 22 homers and 113 RBI, and teammates nicknamed him "Mr. Team" for his knack of coming through in the clutch. He finished with 2,061 hits, 170 home runs and seven All-Star selections over 15 seasons. After managing the Padres and Sacramento Solons in the Pacific Coast League, Elliott got his shot with the Athletics in 1960; the last-place club went 58-96, and new owner Charles O. Finley replaced him with Joe Gordon after just one season. Elliott later coached for the 1961 Los Angeles Angels and died in 1966 at age 49.
