About Joe Gordon
Joe Gordon starred at second base for the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians from 1938 to 1950 before turning to managing, including this 1960 Topps #216, part of the set's manager subset. Nicknamed "Flash," after the comic-strip hero Flash Gordon, he broke in with New York in 1938 and set an American League rookie record with 25 home runs by a second baseman. An acrobatic fielder, he made nine All-Star teams and won the 1942 AL MVP award over Triple Crown winner Ted Williams, helping the Yankees to four World Series titles. Traded to Cleveland in 1947, he hit 32 homers for the pennant-winning 1948 Indians - an AL second-base record until 2001 - and homered in their Series-clinching Game 6 win over the Braves. Gordon managed in the minors, winning a 1957 Pacific Coast League pennant with San Francisco, then took over the Indians in 1958, guiding Cleveland to a second-place finish in 1959 before a mid-1960 trade to Detroit in a rare manager-for-manager swap for Jimmie Dykes. He later managed Kansas City's Athletics and the expansion 1969 Royals. Gordon died in 1978 and was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.
