1960 Topps #30 Tito Francona

About Tito Francona
John "Tito" Francona broke into pro ball in 1952, signing with the St. Louis Browns for a $5,000 bonus the day after his high school graduation in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. After two minor-league seasons and an Army hitch, the left-handed-hitting outfielder-first baseman debuted with the 1956 Baltimore Orioles, finishing tied for second in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Luis Aparicio. Traded twice for Larry Doby, he landed in Cleveland in 1959 and hit .363 — a mark that would have led the league had he collected 34 more at-bats. His 1960 Topps card catches him fresh off that breakout, shifted to left field for newly acquired Harvey Kuenn and opening the season batting cleanup for manager Joe Gordon; his 36 doubles led the American League that year. He earned his only All-Star selection in 1961. Nicknamed "Tito" by his father as a child, Francona played 15 seasons for nine clubs, finishing with a .272 average, 125 home runs and 656 RBI, and later became the father of longtime manager Terry Francona.
